The honest version, not the Pinterest version.
You've probably already searched "maternity photo tips" and gotten ten lists that all say the same three things. This isn't that.
We shoot maternity sessions in Ottawa every season, every year. Here's what we actually tell our clients, the stuff that isn't in the generic guides.
When to book
Forget "third trimester." Too vague to be useful.
Weeks 32 to 35 is the sweet spot. Your bump reads clearly on camera, and you're still comfortable enough to enjoy the hour.
Expecting twins? Move it earlier, weeks 29 to 31. Multiples arrive sooner than you'd think.
Swell by evening? Book morning light. Small detail, real difference.
What to wear (the part everyone gets slightly wrong)
We're photographing your shape. So anything boxy or stiff works against you.
Fitted shows the bump. Flowing moves in the wind. Both work. Pick one, not a blazer.
On colour: deep tones like emerald, plum, and rust photograph rich against most backdrops. Neons bounce colour onto skin and we can't fully fix that later. Soft neutrals just work, always.
Unsure about something in your closet? Send us a photo before the shoot. We'll tell you straight whether it'll photograph well.
The thing that actually separates a session you'll love
We don't bring a client closet, props, or a rack of gowns. On purpose.
Everything in your photos will be yours. That's why they'll still feel like you in ten years, not like a rented backdrop that was trending this fall.
And you won't stand there wondering what to do with your hands. We direct the whole session. The best frames usually happen right after you stop thinking about the camera. Getting you there is the actual job.
What you don't need to do
Practice posing. Rehearse a smile. Apologize for anything.
You need a due date, an outfit that fits how you feel today, and an hour with people who make that hour easy.
That's it. That part's on us.
